Osteopathy for Sciatica & Sciatic Pain

Sciatica can cause pain that travels from the lower back or buttock into the leg and may be accompanied by tingling, numbness or weakness.

Brad provides a thorough assessment to help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether osteopathic treatment and rehabilitation are appropriate.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to symptoms associated with irritation or compression of a nerve root in the lower spine. Symptoms can vary and may include:

Bodies in Balance Tick IconPain travelling into the buttock or leg
Bodies in Balance Tick IconSharp, burning or shooting pain
Bodies in Balance Tick IconPins and needles or numbness
Bodies in Balance Tick IconPain aggravated by certain movements or positions
Bodies in Balance Tick IconWeakness in the affected leg
Bodies in Balance Tick IconPain that may worsen with coughing or sneezing

Not all leg pain is sciatica, so identifying the likely source of your symptoms is an important part of assessment.

Assessment & Treatment

Your care begins with a comprehensive health history and physical assessment. Brad will assess your symptoms, movement and function and, where appropriate, perform neurological testing.

He will discuss his findings with you and recommend an approach based on your presentation, goals and treatment preferences.

Treatment may include soft tissue techniques, joint mobilisation, stretching, dry needling and other hands-on osteopathic techniques, together with movement, exercise and rehabilitation advice. Dry needling may be incorporated where appropriate to address associated muscular tension or discomfort.

If further investigation is needed, Brad can refer for diagnostic imaging such as X-ray, CT or MRI, or recommend referral to another health professional.

Staying Active & Rehabilitation

For many people with uncomplicated sciatica, remaining active within comfortable limits is preferable to prolonged rest.

Brad can provide movement and exercise guidance appropriate to your presentation, with the aim of gradually restoring movement, function and confidence in everyday activities.

Can an osteopath help with sciatica?

Osteopaths can assess people experiencing sciatic pain and may provide conservative care where appropriate. Treatment will depend on your symptoms and assessment findings.

Do I need an MRI for sciatica?

Not necessarily. Imaging is not routinely required for uncomplicated sciatica. If Brad identifies findings that warrant further investigation, he can discuss this with you and arrange an appropriate referral.

Should I keep moving with sciatica?

For uncomplicated sciatica, maintaining appropriate activity is generally encouraged rather than prolonged bed rest. Brad can advise you about movement and exercise based on your individual presentation.
